Treat each texture appropriately

Do you have a mix of waves and loose curls? Maybe a blend of differently sized curls, or even a cacophony of curls and coils? Each curl type has different moisture and styling requirements, so you may need to get creative in caring for each type that co-exists on your head. Tighter curls and coils often need heavier doses of hydration, while straight hair and loose waves may only require a lightweight moisturizer. Many wavies, curlies and coilies are wary of using heat, and with good reason. Overdrying or drying your hair on a temperature that’s too high can cause all sorts of damage, so be sure to diffuse on a medium to low temp and always, ALWAYS use heat protectant.

Opt for a braid out

Another tip is to try a hairstyle that temporarily manipulates your curl pattern to create a more uniform texture. Some examples are braid-outs, twist-outs, bantu knots, and foam roller sets. These are all fun ways to blend your textures and try out new styles with practically no commitment, since they’ll only last until your next wash day. Styles like braid-outs are also excellent options for curlies who prefer a heatless style - you can do any of these styles on damp, towel-dried hair and then let it air dry.
